Allergology is a branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of allergies, immune diseases characterized by hypersensitivity to particular substances, and diseases related to them.

The doctor’s skills obviously also include the field of immunology. The epidemiological study of cases of allergies and related diseases such as rhinopathy, urticaria and asthma is important in the context of prevention. The incidence of cases of allergic diseases is constantly increasing; some epidemiological studies identify the increase in air pollution as an influential factor.

Nowadays, allergies, which is defined as an excessive defence reaction of the immune system against substances considered erroneously harmful, affect at least 15% of the Italian population.

Diagnostic tests can be performed at the Allergy Clinic to find out about your allergies such as:

  • Prick Test – main skin test for diagnosis
  • Specific blood tests – among blood assays, the most commonly used is the search for specific IgE.
  • Nasal symptoms: repeated sneezing, nasal aqueous secretions, stuffy nose, itching.
  • Eye symptoms: itching, redness, swelling, watery eyes, sensitivity to light.
  • Respiratory symptoms: shortness of breath, irritating cough, shortness of breath.
  • Skin symptoms: itching, swelling, redness, welts.
  • Common symptom in everyone: fatigue and irritability.

The skin test (prick test) is the main test for the diagnosis of allergies. Try the suspected allergen on the patient’s skin to check for any allergic reactions that will occur within 15-20 minutes.
Among the blood assays, the most commonly used is the search forspecific IgE.
