Cardiology is a branch of medicine that deals with the study, diagnosis and treatment (pharmacological and/or invasive) of acquired or congenital cardiovascular diseases. Cardiology is a discipline that in recent years has greatly evolved and specializations such as haemodynamic and electrophysiology have developed within it.

It should also be noted that the medical and surgical therapeutic improvement of congenital heart disease has allowed the survival of many children who have become adults and has led to the creation of a new branch of Cardiology that is dedicated to Adult Congenital Heart Disease. In addition to the treatment of cardiovascular diseases, heart failure and abnormalities, the cardiologist deals with cardiovascular prevention and the rehabilitation of patients undergoing cardiac surgery.

There are many diseases that can affect the heart muscle as well as other areas of the cardiovascular system, causing problems and altering the quality of life. It is also good to remember that for the heart the risk increases with age and as a result of some lifestyle habits (smoking, obesity). For this reason, it is essential to take care of the heart by following specific paths dedicated to prevention and early diagnosis such as cardiological check-up, a complete screening consisting of consultations and exams that verify the functioning of the cardiovascular system.

It is recommended for men who have turned 40 and for women who are 50. It is aimed in particular at people who have risk factors such as: diabetes, hypertension, dyslipidemia, smoking addiction, obesity, exposure to strong stress factors, menopause and homocystinemia.

Typically a complete cardiac prevention pathway includes:

  • Broad-spectrum laboratory tests
  • Electrocardiogram at rest
  • Echocardiogram
  • Eco-color-doppler of the trunks
  • Cardiology consultation
