Occupational medicine is the branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of diseases caused by work activities, through blood tests or functional tests, such as:

  • Audiometry
  • Spirometry
  • Visiotest (deeper eye exam)
  • ECG (any in-depth specialist examinations if the doctor deems it necessary)

The occupational physician has a particular experience in identifying the symptoms caused by the worker’s exposure to:

  • acidic chemical agents, basic or toxic in general, coming into contact with the various body systems, in particular the respiratory, digestive, integumentary systems and the repercussions on the nervous system
  • physical agents such as radiation, of varied energy, in particular ultraviolet rays, X-rays, gamma rays
  • volatile substances of varying intrinsic toxicity, which, however, once inhaled can have various consequences. These substances are primarily asbestos fibres that cause asbestosis, then coal dust (a rare occurrence today).
