Ophthalmology (or ophthalmology, ophthalmology) is the branch of medicine that deals with the prevention, diagnosis and treatment of eye diseases, the measurement of vision and the correction of refractive defects. It is one of the oldest medical disciplines.The decisive discovery in the field of diagnosis was the discovery of the ophthalmoscope by Hermann von Helmholtz (1821-1894) in 1851 and the discovery of the perimeter by Richard Förster (1825-1902 ). The decisive steps for eye operations were the operative treatment of cataracts by Albrecht von Graefe (1828-1870), who is considered the father of ophthalmology and the first cornea transplant (keratoplasty) in 1906 by Eduard Zirm (1863-1944).
